About the Bourbon: Nashville Barrel Company’s Small Batch Rye is my first exposure to any of their whiskies. NBC is one of many growing distillers in Tennessee, but it is growing perhaps the most rabid collective of whiskey enthusiasts.
The rye I’m reviewing today is a blend of 4- and 7-year rye whiskies. It’s labeled as batch 1, which I assume foreshadows the coming of a batch 2!
Color: Caramel
Nose: Powdered sugar, honey suckle, and toasted brown sugar, and a touch of smoke.
Palate: Caramel and Krispy Kreme donuts up front, followed subtle spice notes including cinnamon, nutmeg, and black pepper. Drop a couple of cubes in and slight notes of fresh baked pastry and dill spice emerge.
Finish: Cherry wood, pepper, and vanilla
Assessment: Batch 1 Rye drinks more like a bourbon than a rye, with sweetness up front and a backbone of fried bread and buttery goodness. Contrary to typical expectations of a Rye whisky, bold spicy flavors are traded for a delicate infusion of spice which presents itself as an accent around the edges of your palate. The dram offers a medium body, which does fill out with a few drops of water or an ice cube.
Fully advertised as a rye whiskey, if you are expecting a spicy, earthy, punch in the mouth, you will be left scratching your head. Don’t let that discourage you; this is a great whiskey. It is a well thought out and well-crafted blend, it’s complex, it’s sweet, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the entire bottle.
The Barrel Cellar gives Nashville Barrel Company’s Rye Whiskey (batch 1) 90 points.
