About the Bourbon: Today I’m reviewing Brown-Foreman’s 90 proof Old Forester Single Barel offering. The bottle was hand picked by Binny’s Beverage Depot. It was aged in warehouse 1 on floor 4 for an unspecified amount of time (but at least 4 years).
Old Forester has been producing bourbon for over 140 years and claim to have offered the first single barrel expression for sale. While each single barrel will offer a unique selection, I had expected that this one would match up well against the competition.
I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a set of Prestige diamond whiskey glasses.
Color: Russet
Nose: Cinnamon and brown sugar.
Palate: Dried fruit, vanilla, and candied cherries. Drop a couple of cubes in and notes of orange citrus, garden greens, and cherry cola emerge.
Finish: Leather and oak.
Assessment: I keep wanting to compare this (to detrimental effect) with my previous Old Forester experiences including 1910 and Birthday bourbon. At 90 Proof this single barrel offering is lacking a few of the strong carmel and nut flavors of the fore mentioned offerings. Frankly at first I was disappointed, however, after the bottle had some time to open up, I found it quite enjoyable. It is smooth, approachable, and compares well to other bottles in it’s price range.
At a $30 price tag, I’ll buy a bottle of this every time it hits the shelf, but it could really have been something special with a couple more years in the barrel. The barrel cellar gives this Old Forester Single Barrel 88 points.
