About the Bourbon: Angel’s Envy was founded in 2011 by Franklin and Wes Henderson (father and son). Their plan was to produce a bourbon finished in port barrels. Lincoln had been producing quality Bourbon for quite some time, but his idea to age his bourbon in Port barrels was new. Angel’s Envy has quickly gained a reputation for quality, and continues to grow.
I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a set of Prestige diamond whiskey glasses.
Color: Amber
Nose: Vanilla, smoke, cherry, candied orange, caramel, toasted brown sugar, and oak.
Palate: Cinnamon, cherry cola, vanilla cream, and cocoa nibs. Drop a couple of cubes in a notes of banana taffy emerge.
Finish: Cherry syrup, charcoal, black pepper, and oak.
Assessment: Angel’s Envy is one producer in a growing segment of wine barrel finished bourbons. I’ve come to appreciate “finished” bourbons for their artful aspect. They present an opportunity for the distiller to show their crafting skill. This is the smoothest wine barrel finished bourbon I’ve had to date; no other finished bourbon has come close, especially considering it is nearly 110 proof. It drinks like an easy sipping wheated bourbon, even though there isn’t any wheat in the mash bill. It’s soft, has little to no “heat burn” and presents sustained cherry notes, without any hints of “medicine.”
If you are considering venturing from classic bourbon and trying a finished bourbon, Angels Envy is a great place to start. The Barrel Cellar gives Angel’s Envy 92 points.
