About the Bourbon: The Nulu offering I’m reviewing today is an uncut and unfiltered double oaked bourbon. The term double oaked means that it was finished for four months in a second barrel. This process is meant to add spicy and oak aspects to the bourbon.
Nulu double oaked was distilled by MGP distilling. MGP has been distilling since 1847, they are problably best known for distilling, aging, and selling various Bourbon and Rye whiskeys to brand name producers.
I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a glencairn.
Color: Amber
Nose: Cherry, maple syrup, candied orange, toasted brown sugar, candied bacon, tobacco barn, and milk chocolate.
Palate: Smoke, tobacco, and lots of black pepper. Drop a couple cubes in and notes of orange and cherry taffy emerge.
Finish: Orange buttercream, oak, and black pepper
Assessment: It isn’t often where you find a bourbon that drinks hotter than it’s proof, especially a bourbon with as high a proof as this one (120), but Nulu Double Oaked finds a way to do it. The bourbon is hot and spicy. I find it more enjoyable on the rocks. The melting ice mellows the spice and makes it easier to enjoy the various flavor notes on the palate.
From a texture perspective, the juice has an oily mouth feel and light body. The defining character is definitely the spice notes. My wife loves this bourbon to a point that it is her new favorite bourbon. I find this surprising as she usually seems to prefer lower proof offerings. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the bottle, but personally i wish this bourbon had a bit more body, and slightly less “heat”.
