About the Bourbon:  Nevada H&C Distilling Company’s “Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered” is a blend of barrel strength bourbons ranging in age between 4 and 8 years.  The batch I’m reviewing today is batch 69 (nice).  It was bottled May 27th, 2021.  The mash bill contains Corn, Rye, and Barley and was sourced from Indiana’s MGP distilling.  I would expect that fully Nevada produced Bourbon is just around the corner.  

I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a set of Prestige diamond whiskey glasses.

Color: Copper

Nose:  Cherry cola, peppermint, fresh baked chocolate chip cookies (without the chocolate), apple dipped in honey, cinnamon, and clove.

Palate: Caramel, spearmint, cinnamon, and earth.  Drop a couple of cubes in, and notes of pineapple, honey, and orange zest emerge.

Finish:  Oak/tannin, cedar, pipe tobacco and black pepper.

Assessment:  Smoke wagon is a full-bodied stunner, there are hints of sweet notes and a truckload of herbal and peppery spice aspects as well.  I prefer this with a bit of ice which brings notes of pineapple, apple dipped in freshly harvested honey, and some orange zest – which intermingles with notes of caramelized brown sugar to inspire images of a fantastic holiday glazed ham.  From a character perspective, this bourbon is bold; the flavors are strong, the heat a bit in your face, and the spice lingers on the finish.  The bold aspects of the dram do feel like a bit of a trade off, it lacks smoothness, and leaves it feeling the slightest bit disjointed.  It is a very good bourbon, just a little rough around the edges.
