About the Bourbon: Barrell Bourbon produces blended bourbon that is made from hand selected, high quality barrels distilled by different sources. Once blending is complete, Barrell bottles it at cask strength. “Batch 021” is my first experience with Barrell Bourbon, and I picked a good place to start; Batch 021 was named “Best Bourbon” at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Barrell names its releases after the batch, so Batch 21 is the 21st batch in a line that one can assume will go on indefinitely. While the age statement on the bottle claims 10 years, Barrell’s website notes that the blend actually consists of a mix of bourbon aged from 10-14 years.
I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a set of Prestige diamond whiskey glasses.
Color: Rusty Amber
Nose: Rum-raisin, vanilla, peaches and cream, caramel, and floral notes.
Taste: Smoke, charcoal, and caramel. Drop a couple of ice cubes in and hints of butter toffee, cocoa nibs, and mineral notes emerge.
Assessment: I recently had a few friends over for the weekend. We commonly get together to share our appreciation for both wine and bourbon (actually any alcohol if I’m being honest). I opened this bottle to share, and to get their thoughts on whether or not Barrell’s Batch 21 was deserving of its “best bourbon” award. The generous proof announces itself with a bit of a burn, but is held in check by a silky smooth texture. The bourbon is full bodied with a slightly oily mouthfeel.
My “tasting panel” of friends and I had a bit of difference in opinion on what the fruit dominant note on the palate was. Some offered up candied cherries, others plum. I’m sticking with rum-raisin; a very tasty rum-raisin. We did, as a group, agree that Batch 21 is an “exceptional bourbon.” The Best Bourbon award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition isn’t a fluke. Barrell Craft Spirits hit the mark with this one, and Batch 21 has put them on the map of destinations to visit in bourbon country for me.
Barrell Craft Spirits’ Batch 21 is an exceptional Bourbon. If you can find it buy don’t hesitate to grab a bottle. 93 points.
