About the Bourbon: Weller Full Proof is a relatively new addition to the WL Weller product line, which is produced by Buffalo Trace Distillery. Like the other offerings in the Weller line of bourbons, Full Proof is wheated, which often results in a softer bourbon that is highlighted by fruit notes. For comparison purposes, a rye backed bourbon is usually bolder and spicier. The “wild card” factor with full proof, when compared to the other offerings in the Weller product line, is the difference made by the higher proof in the bottle.

I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a set of Prestige diamond whiskey glasses.

Color: Maple

Nose:  Dried fruits, vanilla, smoke, and honey

Taste:  Raisins, tea leaves, leather, candied cherries, brown sugar, cinnamon, and oak. Drop a couple of ice cubes in and notes of cured tobacco, dark roast coffee, and graham cracker emerge.  Finish:  Sustained with brown sugar notes and the slightest hint of a tootsie roll.

Assessment: Weller Full Proof’s high ABV is on full display at first sip. Even after weeks of decanting each pour will greet you with a big ole’ Kentucky hug. That’s not a bad thing, In fact it’s a nice way to set the offering apart from the other bourbons in the Weller line, which tend to be comparatively milder when it comes to heat and spice. The bourbon has a full body and a bold character, it’s has fantastic complexity, featuring a wide range of flavor notes. It’s a great value at $55 and compares well with other bourbon’s in the price range.

Buffalo Trace Distilling’s Weller Full Proof is a very good bourbon. If you can find it don’t hesitate to grab a bottle. 90 points.
