About the Bourbon: Michter’s distillery traces its heritage back to 1753. In 1993 Michter’s sour mash whiskey was named “whiskey of the year.” To make toasted barrel, Michter’s took that very whiskey and aged it for an additional time in a barrel made from wood that was air-dried for 18 months and then toasted (as opposed to charred).
I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a set of Prestige diamond whiskey glasses.
Color: Rust
Nose: Oak, maple, rose petals, and vanilla bean.
Taste: Cocoa nibs, dried herbs, oak, pencil shavings, burnt sugar. Drop a couple of ice cubes in and notes of leather, sweet cream, and a hint of black pepper emerge.
Finish: Sweet cream and orange zest.
Assessment: Prior to opening this bottle, I had never had Michter’s before. Not even a pour at a local establishment. I can promise you this will not be my last bottle of Michter’s. This stuff is fantastic. It’s huge on complexity. There is a large variety of flavor notes, and the way these flavor notes present themselves in length and depth seems to evolve day by day. This limited-edition offering is full bodied and feels smooth on the palate, its character is outstanding in that it leaves an impression, I want more.
Michter’s Distillery Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash Whiskey is an exceptional bottle of bourbon. 95 points.
