About the Bourbon: Named after its producer, this bourbon, made from Buffalo Trace Distillery’s corn heavy Mash bill #1 has been my go to for years. This is a high-volume bourbon, although in the last year or so it seems to be periodically hard to find on the shelves of even normally well stocked liquor stores. Fortunately for bourbon lovers, the price for a bottle continues to hold steady and is a great value. It’s an everyday sipper, and a great steppingstone for jumping into some of the namesake distillery’s higher end and more limited bourbon releases
I enjoyed the bourbon for this review using a Prestige diamond whiskey glass.
Nose: Brown sugar, rye, and pear
Taste: Cinnamon flavor hit my palate first along with some black pepper, and Strawberry Crush cola. After decanting in the glass a bit I notice flavor notes of cornbread, earthy rye and leather (neat). Drop a couple of cubes in the glass and peach notes emerge. Finish has charred oak and leather. Slightly oily texture.
Assessment: This bourbon brings back memories for me. Business trips sitting on the hotel back porch at night overlooking lake Michigan, jam sessions with a guitar and a group of friends, mowing the lawn on a hot summer day, and late nights by the fireplace and the Christmas tree. This bourbon has character and balance. There is a lot of flavor, but no single flavor overwhelms another. It’s great neat or over ice, and it’s priced as such that the value is fantastic. Buffalo Trace is a bourbon that I always have a bottle of. It is my go-to bourbon.
Buffalo Trace Bourbon is a very good bourbon and a fantastic value. 90 Points
