About the Winemaker: Caton Vinyards is located in the foothills of Sonoma Valley. The grapes in the vineyard benefit from various conditions. These conditions include plentiful exposure to sun, prime vine growing soil types, and vast differences in elevation (some vines differ in elevation by as much as 300 feet). The winery credits its fantastic wines, vintage to vintage to “meticulous farming practice.” These efforts pay off in unique character notes, and wines of consistent quality.
Color: Plum
Nose: Fresh cherry, vanilla, and oak
Taste: Currant, black cherry, plum flesh, cinnamon, black pepper, and oak.
Assessment: Ty Caton has produced a medium bodied, velvety, and easy drinking wine with the 2010 vintage. It’s fairly well balanced, with the scales tipping a bit to the acidic side on the finish. Nice California fruit shows through in the glass, without being “jammy” or “chewy” which really sets this apart from many other wines of the region. The relatively high alcohol content in the bottle presents itself with a bit of cinnamon and black pepper on the finish. This wine is great for a night by a fire or paired with something sweet.
Pairing recommendation: Bruschetta with whole milk Mozzarella, or double chocolate cake.
The Barrel Cellar rates Ty Caton 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon 88 points.
