About the Bourbon: Rossville Union’s master crafted whiskey is a blend of MGP produced rye mash bill whiskies. The offering I’m reviewing today is a blend of barrels in the age range of 5-6 years.
I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a set of Prestige diamond whiskey glasses.
Color: Golden Brown
Nose: Bread dough, sweet tea, leather, and graham cracker.
Taste: Cinnamon (specifically Red Hots), fresh mint, fresh basil, honey, leather, and banana taffy. Drop a couple cubes in and the drink sweetens with notes of peanut, mint, and tea.
Finish: Rye spice, orange citrus, and cinnamon
Assessment: Rossville Union is a pretty straight forward rye. There is plenty of spice, some nice fruity notes, and a bit of heat from the proof. The dram has a medium body with a slightly oily mouthfeel. These who favor rye whiskeys will enjoy this one, I do however feel this is an example of a rare instance when the whiskey could have benefited from less time in the barrel. It lacks the strong earthy notes and dominant rye spice notes I typically look for in a bottle of rye; these notes, I assume, have been mellowed by the extended time spent in a barrel. Overall, the price is right, the whiskey is good and if you like rye whiskey you will like this one.
The Barrel Cellar gives Rossville Union Rye from Rossville Distillery 88 points.
