About the Bourbon: E.H. Taylor is part of the Buffalo Trace family of bourbons. It is named after Colonel E.H. Taylor who bought a distillery soon after the end of the Civil War; he was one of the founders of the modern bourbon industry. Today’s bottles of E.H. Taylor are made with methods that evolved from E.H.s original distilling methods, and the bourbon continues to be aged in some of the original warehouses constructed by Colonel Taylor as well.
I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a set of Prestige diamond whiskey glasses.
Color: Copper
Nose: Honey and tobacco
Taste: Leather, strong brewed iced tea, honey, and orange citrus. Drop a couple of cubes in and notes of sweet cream, cherry, and oak emerge
Finish: Orange blossom, honey, and oak.
Assessment: I avoided picking up a bottle of this bourbon for years. Even as it got harder to find, and I’d see crowds rushing in to buy it the minute it hit he shelf at my local stores. I always figured that its popularity was due more to the increased popularity of bourbon paired with Buffalo Trace’s stature as one of the most consistent and fantastic bourbon producers in the world. Also, I figured the relatively young age on the whiskey would keep it from being anything out of the ordinary. For purposes of reviewing it here, I finally decided to buy a bottle. I let it sit a few months before opening it, and then, eventually, I did open it. Man, was I missing out. I messed up; I’ve been wasting time. The stuff is fantastic. It’s an easy drinker; it’s smooth, it hides its proof well (with only the slightest hint of pepper spice) and it’s just plain tasty. Perhaps the best thing about it, is that it has somehow, even though it’s allocated, has maintained a reasonable MSRP.
E.H Taylor Small Batch is a very good bourbon. 91 points.
