About the Bourbon: Remus Repeal Reserve is a limited edition offering made from a blend of 3 hand picked bourbons produced by MGP in Indiana. The mashbills from the three bourbons average out to be about 26% rye. Remus Reserve was originally created to commemorate the repeal of prohibition in 1933 and is named after George Remus who was a bootlegger during prohibition. The 2019 series III release, which I am reviewing today, was awarded a “Double Gold” at the San Francisco Spirits Competition.
I enjoyed the whiskey for this review using a set of Prestige diamond whiskey glasses.
Color: Rust with a golden tint
Nose: Honey, cherry, vanilla, nutmeg
Taste: Freshly baked cinnamon rolls, peppermint, and oak. Drop a couple of ice cubes in and notes of citrus, smoke, and black pepper emerge.
Finish: Cinnamon and oak.
Assessment: This is a smooth drinker thanks to both age and blending. The character is reserved with subtle flavor hints rather than having stand out flavor notes. There is definitely a nice flavor of cinnamon and sugar up front. There are some nice “pastry” notes behind the cinnamon and sugar that have me wondering how this would pair with a Cinnabon cinnamon roll. I intend to find out.
The bourbon is smooth like you would expect a 12-year bourbon to be. It’s full bodied with few rough edges, and it’s a really nice sipper. The flavor profile is enjoyable, but it is definitely outshined by the nose.
George Remus Distilling’s Repeal Reserve is a very good bourbon. 90 points.
