About the Winemaker: San Filippo was recently purchased by Roberto Giannelli. This property sits on the northern side of the town of Montalcino in Tuscany. Brunello di Montalcino is only produced in the immediate area of Montalcino. San Filippo also is known for their Rosso di Montalcino. This is an Italian D.O.G.C (guaranteed quality) Brunello and has been aged in Ukrainian oak.
Color: Smokey Topaz
Nose: Raisin, walnut, smoke
Taste: Tobacco, raisin, oak, truffle, cherry cola, and earth
Assessment: This old world Brunello has me old world charmed. In typical Brunello fashion it is highly acidic and tannic, bold and smokey, full bodied and silky smooth, yet amazingly well balanced. It is an offensive lineman with the grace of a professional ballet dancer. While this wine is a stereotypical Brunello, having a color that is almost orange and a scent of age and oak, it is by no means run of the mill; it has been nurtured and is well crafted. For those of you that are price conscious, you will find the same quality in a more recent vintage. At 15 years old the 2004 is ready to drink now.
San Filippo La Lucerne 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is exceptional. 92 Points.
Pairing recommendation: Lamb, beef, pasta, bean soup.
