Jack Daniel’s is a legendary name in American whiskey, with a history and reputation that go beyond the bottle. The brand uses a distinctive charcoal mellowing process, filtering its whiskies through sugar maple charcoal, which gives them a smooth and distinctive flavor.
Some people may regard Jack Daniel’s as a “mixer”, especially in their younger years. However, the success and reach of the brand, as well as the volume of whisky it produces, should not overshadow the quality of the whiskey they make. Jack Daniel’s has been crafting whiskey for a long time, and they know what they are doing, especially with their higher-end offerings.
Color: Maple Syrup
Nose: Caramel, banana pie, cherry, cinnamon, smoke.
Palate: Banana taffy, almond paste, pecan, and fresh caramel rolls. Add an ice cube and notes of butter cream and orange zest emerge.
Finish: Sustained with notes of banana taffy, white pepper, and charcoal.
Assessment:
Banana taffy is a signature note of Jack Daniel’s, and it is always present on my palate, no matter which expression I’m drinking. The Single Barrel Select I’m reviewing today is no exception. Another characteristic of Jack Daniel’s is a smooth and slightly oily texture. However, this is where the similarities with the standard Jack Daniel’s end. This bourbon has bolder and richer flavors than a typical pour of Jack Daniel’s. It has a fantastic balance of sweet and buttery caramel, nutty and spicy notes, and a bright citrus zest that enhances the flavors with an ice cube.
Jack Daniel’s has created an image of a unique and one-of-a-kind whiskey through its branding and history. Their single barrels take it a step further. Each barrel preserves the essence of the brand, but also has its own personality and flavor profile. This is a complex and satisfying whiskey that any whiskey lover will appreciate.
