About the Bourbon: Short Barrel is a company that produces and sells bourbon and rye whiskey. It was founded by two friends who decided to buy some barrels of bourbon, label it and sell it. They claim that their whiskey is born in Kentucky and raised in Atlanta, and that they use short barrels to age their whiskey in a unique and powerful way.
Short Barrel offers different varieties of bourbon, such as single barrel, honey-finished, rye, and toasted barrel. I have had a very positive experience with them so far, but this will be the first time I try their rye.
The color of the rye is a dull amber. The nose offers a burst of oak and spice right off the bat, with notes of sweet tea, French toast, and dehydrated peaches. On the palate, there is a wonderful peaches and cream profile, with plentiful spice and oak, and a lingering warmth on the finish. Drop a couple of cubes in and notes of maple and green apple emerge. This whiskey really shines after the first sip and your palate has a chance to adjust. A creamy mouthfeel creates a reinforcing aspect to the profile. For those who like a bit of ice or a few drops of water in their whiskey, you will find the spiciness fades a bit, leaving a fruit forward, and slightly sweet dram.
Whiskey out of a short barrel is by nature bold. Having less whiskey in the barrel means more exposure to the oak and char for the little bit of whiskey left in it. That holds true with this whiskey as well.
Overall, this Single Barrel Rye by Short Barrel is a well-crafted rye whiskey. It showcases the benefits of using short barrel, offering a lot of character and intensity, without being harsh or overpowering. The Barrel Cellar gives Short Barrel’s SiB Rye Whiskey 91 points.
