About the Bourbon: Old Dominick Spirits was a booming business in Memphis Tennessee Pre-Prohibition. Old Dominick Spirit’s is now the only entirely distilled, barreled, aged, and bottled bourbon in Memphis. I recently grabbed a single barrel master distiller (Alex Castle) selected offering selected from a local retailer in Tennessee. The single barrel “Huling Station” bourbon I’m reviewing today consists of a mash bill of 52% corn, 44% rye, and 4% malted barley.
Color: Iced Tea
Nose: Honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, toasted almond, and cinnamon.
Palate: Cinnamon red hots, sweet tea, and a hint of eucalyptus Drop a couple of ice cubes in and notes of orange citrus, vanilla, and clove emerge
Finish: Sustained with brown sugar and almond paste.
Assessment: Huling station brings the heat. It’s bold with lots of baking spice: the first sip is a bit overwhelming on the palate with cinnamon “red hot” heat spice, which mellows once your palate has time to adjust. This is definitely a spice lover’s bourbon. Spice first with a complimentary sweetness. Additional, flavor notes permeate the spicy palate with notes of mint, tea, cloves and even some eucalyptus.
The bourbon is medium bodied with an oily mouthfeel and has a smooth texture. Adding a bit of ice, will cut the heat. It will also add some nice vanilla notes and a little creaminess to the texture. I find I best enjoy this whiskey “on the rocks”
This is a solid whiskey, and it is priced fairly. It has stronger character than many bottles in the same price range, but it doesn’t really stand as unique either. The Barrel Cellar gives Old Dominick Distillery’s Huling Station Straight Bourbon 86 points.
